Leaseholder Action has been featured in The Sun as part of a wider report from the Chief Consumer Reporter, James Flanders, into the rising burden of service charges faced by leaseholders across England and Wales.
The lawyer behind Leaseholder Action, Liam Spender, spoke with James about the widespread issue of unjustified service charges. Their discussion covered the little-known practice – revealed in February 2023 – of landlords and insurance brokers secretly taking up to 60% of the £1.6 billion paid annually by leaseholders for buildings insurance in hidden commissions.
Liam also shared his personal experience of waiting months for essential repairs after a section of flooring in his flat collapsed – despite paying substantial annual service charges, much of which was allocated to buildings insurance. He discovered that £300 of his buildings insurance premium had been siphoned off in commission by his landlord and their broker.
“There are millions of people like me in the same boat and they are owed money they don’t even know about,” Liam told The Sun.
At Leaseholder Action, we are working to expose and challenge these hidden commissions. We aim to empower leaseholders to assert their rights, demand transparency, and seek redress where unfair practices have occurred.
